4 things I learned from scanning the AL Direct Student Edition today

I just received my American Libraries Direct Student Edition e-mail today, as all student members of ALA receive as part of their membership. Here are four things I found very interesting:

FIRST, get involved in ALA! Here's how.

Second, this list which I have seen circulating in listservs is very cool. The 100 Best Blogs for Librarians of the Future.

Third, a very interesting list of tools for creating bibliographies.

Fourth, did you know student members get a 10% discount at the ALA store? Cool.

Be sure to join ALA today, so that you can get your AL Direct Student Edition as well!

Research Day Committee

Last year, the ALA chapter sponsored a SLIS Research Day which included Poster Sessions and presentations from students regarding the work they do at the school. Students and Faculty were able to learn from each other and share exciting research. During the Spring Semester we will hold Research Day again and we want more students to participate this year.

Would you be interested in helping us make this year's event bigger and better? Then I invite you to join the Research Day Committee. This will be headed up by Kacy Lundstrom who participated in the event last year. What would you be doing as a committee member? Basically, we want your input and we want our members to publicize the event to the school. We want to hold some kind of event during the Fall that will generate interest in Research Day. With your help we can make this something really beneficial to the school and something you would like to present in!

So if you would like to be a part of this committee please email me at jlking40356@gmail.com and let me know. Within the next couple of weeks we would like to hold our first planning meeting. Thanks!

Interested in a Leadership position?

UPDATE! This position has been filled... congrats to Leslie Kuhnen who will be President-Elect this year, and President during the 2010-2011 academic year!

We want to know if there are any first year SLIS students, who will still be going to school in the 2010-2011 academic year that would be interested in a leadership role with ALA.

As President-Elect, you will help us organize events, raise funds, and promote ALA awareness. It's not a huge time commitment. At the end of the 2009-2010 academic year, the President-Elect becomes President for the next year. That's why we only want to hear from students who know they will be here next year. It's a great opportunity to get involved with a professional organization as a student.

If interested, please email Jessica at jlking40356@gmail.com.

Thanks!

2009 KLA/KSMA Conference

The KLA/KMSA conference is coming up! September 30 - October 3 at the Galt House in Louisville. Student registration is only $10 which is a steal. Go to KLA's website for more information: http://www.kylibasn.org/

Joining KLA as a student member is also not a bad idea. Kentucky isn't one of the states that offers a deal where you can get ALA and state membership at the same time, but the cost of joining both isn't that bad. Only $33 to join ALA and (I think) only $15 to join KLA. That's only $48 for a whole year, very cheap compared to what prices are when you are no longer a student.

Our facebook page has opened a discussion for students attending the conference. This way you can collaborate on transportation, housing, etc. If you discover anything really cool - let us know in the comments!

Thanks!
