Poster Tips & KLS/KSMA Joint Conference

The deadline for posters at the KLS/KSMA Joint Conference in September is February 15, just two days after the symposium. You should participate in our symposium to get useful feedback on tailoring your poster for the joint conference.

Bob Buys Books

To those of you selling your textbooks:

Bob Buys Books is offering 5% of their buyback sales to UKALA if you sell your books back with them. This is a nice way to make money for yourself and ALA at the same time. All you have to do is mention that you are doing business with them in order to help UKALA when you sell back your books. Research Symposium – Call for Proposals/Abstracts

This year’s Research Symposium will be a combined event with the College of Communications and Information Studies. It will give us the opportunity to contribute our research and scholarship and to see what other students in the College are also working on.

Here’s why you should consider presenting a poster at this event:

- It’s a wonderful way to get some experience presenting without having to worry about being too intimidated. Everyone is invited to submit and we will do our best to help you feel prepared to present (and hopefully even enjoy it).
- You can use research projects you have already worked on or are currently working on. This includes class projects, research papers you have written, work-related research or just something you’d like to explore further and share with everyone. Any of these can be used as the basic concept for your poster.
- It’s a great line for your resume!
- Faculty and students from our School and from the College will be there to support you and ask questions.
- We will be offering online materials and a face-to-face “How to” session on creating an effective poster.

The date for this event is tentatively set for mid-February. We wanted to send a call for proposals now so that you can begin preparing and thinking about what you would like to present.

Abstracts/Proposals should be approximately 150 words and should briefly describe what you will be presenting in your poster. Abstracts/Proposals should be sent to Jen Green (jennifer.n.green@uky.edu) by Friday, February 5th. We will send reminders at the beginning of next semester. Please let us know if you have questions about the abstract or the poster. More details will be sent out about the date and time of the How-To Session. We look forward to seeing and hearing about your research!

Call for Essays - ALA Student-to-Staff Program

Hello, I’m excited to announce a great opportunity for ALA members who want to go to the ALA Annual Conference in June 2010. As the UK student chapter of ALA we are able to select one student to participate in the ALA Student-to-Staff Program. Here is some information about the program from ALA’s Don Wood:

“Students are expected to work 16 hours for four days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday). Usually this means working for one unit, such as the International Relations Office, the Public Information Office, the ALA Store, American Association of School Librarians, for the entire time, but could also mean working 8 hours for one unit and 8 hours for another.

In return, each student receives free Annual Conference registration, $50 per diem [4 days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) x $50 = $200] and housing (each student has a roommate whenever possible) for 5 nights (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday). The $200 and housing information are sent before conference to addresses provided by the students. Note: Transportation costs (taxis, flights, etc., are the student’s responsibility.

Roommates are matched by gender, primarily. If there are 21 females and 19 males, one female and one male will not be sharing their rooms with another student-to-staff member. Prior to conference, students must complete a short questionnaire to help us match them with appropriate ALA units (e.g., Public Library Association, Office for Library Advocacy, Conference Services). Based on their assignment, students may be expected to perform a range of duties from clerical, to sales, to use of computers, to setting up and staffing events, etc. We have seen many of the students become active in ALA as they move into successful careers. Students tell us that they benefit from the behind-the-scenes involvement in ALA. We certainly benefit from their help, fresh perspectives, and enthusiasm.”

In order to be eligible to participate in the program you must be an ALA member and a student in the SLIS program at the time of the conference, which is June 24-29 in Washington, D.C. If you would like to be considered please submit an essay to me (jlking40356@gmail.com) including the following:

1) Your involvement in ALA up to this point
2) Why you should be selected for the program

It doesn’t have to be more than a paragraph or two. The deadline to submit an essay is January 18, 2010. Once the essays are collected they will be read by myself, Dr. Miller, and maybe another officer in the student chapter. If you are not currently a member of ALA then join today for the annual rate of $33 and then submit an essay! We really want someone to represent UK at Annual this year, tell us why it should be you! 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant Applications being accepted now!

APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR 3M/NMRT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANT

We are excited to announce that members of ALA's New Members Round Table (NMRT) can apply to receive a grant, sponsored by 3M Library Systems, which will cover expenses to attend the ALA Annual Conference, June 24–30, 2010, in Washington, DC.
