January Blurb: Spring Semester News

Hello to our fellow SLIS students! Your UK Student Chapter of ALA hopes that this semester goes well for you both professionally and academically. ALA offers many opportunities to professionally develop and all at the cheap student annual rate of $33! Here are some upcoming news from both the student chapter and ALA:

ALA’s Midwinter Meeting is coming up, January 23-28 in Denver. We have some attendees from our program so we hope to hear exciting reports from them!

ALA’s Annual 2009 Conference will be held much closer in Chicago, July 9-15. The student chapter is working on scheduling a van so students can have a cheaper transportation option for Annual. We are also working to raise funds for student expenses in Chicago including Annual registration fees and hotel rates. If you would like to help us in our fundraising efforts or have a great idea for fundraising please let us know!

There are two big events we are working on for this semester. One is a poster session/research day to be held in late April. We hope that students and professors will get involved with this and turn it into a true information sharing experience and a great exercise in the professional work of librarianship. Further details will be available soon.

In order to prepare for our poster session we are also going to host a poster/paper presentation workshop on Monday, February 23 from 10:30 to 11:45 AM. Even if you don’t plan on presenting at the poster session in April (though we hope the workshop changes your mind!) you can still learn a lot about presenting and sharing information with colleagues.

Last but not least some interesting ALA links. If you are already a member of ALA or are interested please contact our President, Faith Steele at fnstee2@email.uky.edu. You can also access updates on what your UK ALA Student Chapter is planning at our blog: http://ukstudentalachapter.blogspot.com. Thanks and good luck this semester!
